Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

In the past few weeks, Alt & I have been smashing skulls and severing limbs all over the place in this Medieval Multiplayer Slasher.

Now most modes are a general cluster fuck like you’ve just seen, but find your way onto a Duel Server and the game truly shines. There’s no better feeling than clashing swords with your foes in honourable combat.

The game is currently £18.99 from steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/219640/

Or you can buy it direct from Torn Banner Studios, Gamers Gate or Gamestop for £15.50 which is still a steam code:

The devs have recently stated in the forums that over the next week or 2, they should be releasing a big patch filled with general fixes, new maps, weapons and an official duel mode.

It’s definately worth your time and money.

Square Enix Launch Ad-Supported Gaming Platform

With the recent troubles at Onlive you’d think that now would be the worst time to launch a cloud-based gaming service. Well, Square Enix don’t think so. The critically acclaimed publisher today launched their take on cloud-based gaming, but with a twist. Core Online allows you to play games for free, as long as you watch some adverts before hand.

I tested the service out earlier and it was relatively simple to get going, I didn’t even have to sign in. Although if I had signed in I would have received some free playtime apparently.

The concept is simple, watch a one minute advert and get around twenty minutes play time. Currently the only games supported are Hitman: Blood Money and Mini Ninjas, but Square Enix plan to add more games to their catalogue in the future, starting with Lara Croft: Guardian of Light in October.

This service is definitely something to keep an eye on, but it does bring forth the same questions that surround Onlive and other cloud-based platforms.

Has Ubisoft Lost It’s Mind?

image

Speaking to GamesIndustry International Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explained his decision to move Ubisoft over to the free to play model of game publishing.

Highlighting specifically ‘PC Gamers’ Guillemot said that “On PC its only around 5 to 7 percent of players who pay for free to play, but normally it’s only around 5 to 7 percent that pay anyway, the rest is pirated. It’s around 93 to 95 percent piracy rate so it ends up at about the same percentage.”

Not only is this statistic ludicrous, it is also highly offensive to all the genuine PC gamers that spend money on Ubisoft games.

Twice this month I have been locked out of playing a Ubisoft game due to Uplay failures. All this while pirates had full access to the game due to the removal of DRM via a crack.

It appears Ubisoft may be clutching at straws to explain why they consistently disappoint when it comes to the PC platform. The PC gaming market is growing rapidly and will most likely be the leading platform for years to come and Ubisoft may have just put a serious dent in their future sales. Rule number one: Don’t call your customers thieves.

Get off the Fence and Into some Sleeping Dogs (what?)

Those of you who are ‘umming and arring’ about picking up the new open-world game Sleeping Dogs, you should sit on the fence no longer. Buy it. This is not a review, because I haven’t finished it yet. I am savouring every moment I can. I don’t want this game to end, but there is a deep feeling of dread inside me because I know that it will end sometime. But the fact that I’m at 40% complete after 14 hours playing is sweet solace.

Not only is Sleeping Dogs the best open-world game I’ve ever played (previous holder was Scarface, surprisingly some of these devs worked on this game too), it is also a contender for the best ‘beat ’em up’ and best arcade racer too. And that’s not even mentioning the fantastic storyline and gunplay.

I hope Sleeping Dogs sells ridiculously well because this game is a statement to other publishers on how to make a game. The developers United Front Games are now on my watchlist and I am eager to see what they come up with next.

Check out this extended video courtesy of TotalBiscuit – WTF Is… Sleeping Dogs?

It can be snatched up for a relatively measly sum over on GreenManGaming using this code – DERHE-RRDER-RINGE for 20% off

Tell them I sent you, or don’t. They won’t know what you are talking about anyway.

Command & Conquer Generals 2 is changing to “Pay-to-Win”

Yesterday at Gamescom EA announced that the Bioware developed sequel would be a Free-to-Play game.

“For nearly two decades, this franchise has existed as something you buy; now we are creating a destination where our fans will be able to access the entire Command & Conquer universe, starting with Generals and continuing with Red Alert, Tiberium and beyond.
“With Frostbite 2, we are able to keep an emphasis on the AAA quality our consumers expect while staying true to the RTS gameplay they know and love – all available online for free.”

Sign up for the Beta here if you want to. It requires an Origin account.

A sad day for all C&C Generals veterans. At least we have Company of Heroes 2 to look forward to.

Now go away and play real games.
